Gust Gustafson Notes

Story notes below based on transcrption of "A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans", 1919, c1918. See full document at http://www.skyways.org/genweb/archives/1919ks/g2.html

Gust Gustason was born 9-29-1862 in Kalmar Lan, Sweden. His father, Gustav Ericsson, died at age 87 in Sweden. His two siblings also died in Sweden. He was a prominent landowner, cattleman and grain farmer in Stevens County, KS.

Gust was 21 years old when he emigrated to the USA with is wife and daugher. Due to lack of funds, they were stranded in Chicago, IL until his brother-in-law (Charles Nelson) sent him $35 to continue their journey to Kansas. During his first winter in Kansas, Gust worked for Taylor Stebbins for a wage of $20 a month. He saved enough money to later move to Stevens County where Charles Nelson and family were living at the time.

For the first five years in Stevens County, the family lived in a 14x16 foot single room dugout. During this time he was able to build a better home and raised broom corn, grain and Indian corn. He eventually owned as many as 400 head of Shorthorn cattle. After ten years in Stevens County, he began buying land and eventuly owned ten quarters.

Gust married Clara Sakerson in Sweden and she died on 12-26-1907 in Stevens County, KS. They had eight children together: Susie (Mrs John Dean of Hutchinson); Charles, a farmer of land near the homestead; Ida (Mrs Don Coffey of Wichita); Elsie (Mrs Tudor Hal of Stevens County; Lucy (Mrs J. J. Parkey of Dalhart TX); Edward, farmed with is father at the homestead; Bessie (Mrs Jerry Slier of Stevens County); Raymond (assisted his father). Gust later married Mrs. Laura Warren Pennington who came to Shawnee County from Fulton County IL. She had one daughter, Grace Pennington.

Gust took out his citizenship papers in McPherson County and was a member of the Lutheran church there. He was a member of the Republican party. Over the years he also held the positions of director of school district No. 21; clerk of Center, formerly Cleveland, Township; member of the local board of the Federal Land Bank and an appraiser of that board.

[ NOTE: Gust' s birth name was Konstans Gustafsson and his actual DOB was 28 Sept 1859. His father, Gustaf Erik Nilsson, was born 1823 in Morlunda, Kalmar Lan, Sweden. Gust's siblings: Carl Johan Alfred Gustafsson Stjernberg, b. 1851 in Morlunda; Ida Charlotta Gustafsdotter, b 1854 in Morlunda]. Gust married Clara Maria Zacharisdotter, b 1-24-1852 in Gardveda, Kalmar, Sweden. Clara's brother, Charles Nelson, was born Carl August Zacharisson on 7-14-1845 in Gardveda. Another brother of Clara, Johan Alfrid Zacharisson (AKA in USA: Nilsson or Nelson) is believed to died in IL or KS. Her father, Zacharis Nilsson died in Hugoton or western KS.
